Finding a good music repair shop for you

One of the most important decisions you’ll have to make during your music career, besides selecting your instrument, is picking the best music repair shop for you!

Some of the qualities you should look for in your repair shop include:

  1. Being able to explain clearly and concisely the repairs needed to return an instrument to top playing condition,

  2. Good customer reviews,

  3. Area of service expertise (i.e. some specialize in pianos or strings, etc.)

  4. A competent music repair shop will be able to give you estimates for routine services (such as pad replacement in woodwinds), however sometimes the instrument needs to be seen in person so that the repairman can see exactly what is wrong.

  5. Another good quality for a repair person to have is a passion for music. It’s important to have a good relationship with your repair person, and by being able to share a common passion of music, it will help you trust and get to know them.

  6. It is also very important that your repair person can take special care of each individual client. Each player/instrument relationship is different, and as such each instrument will need repairs different rates based on how each person uses it.

  7. Another important step to take when searching for a music repair shop is to find reviews of the shops you’re looking at. You want to find a repair person who is qualified for the job, and will be able to quickly and easily tell you how much repairs are going to cost. It’s important to not use a repair person who over or undercharges too much, as they could both leave you with less than desirable results.

Lastly, if you have any questions, make sure to contact the repair shop directly – they will always be more than happy to answer your questions!
